Amendment Defeated In Vote On Congress Pay Hike

The House refused to roll back a $12 900 pay raise for members of Congress and 20 000 other officials and employees. An amendment to cut funds was defeated as the March raise became effective automatically. House Speaker O'Neill defended the ethics code tied to the raise. The pay hike lifted salaries from 44 600 to 57 500, with increases for the vice president Cabinet members and top officials, while federal judges kept their pay. The House also sent Carter a bill denying the projected 6.3 percent cost of living hike to those who already received the March increase.

Girl Scout Dragged From Tent in Florida State Park

A 15 year old Girl Scout wearing a Mickey Mouse T shirt was dragged from a tent at Oscar Scherer State Park by a heavily built man as a large manhunt began. About 100 law enforcement officers volunteers and a mounted posse searched two miles south of Osprey and 12 miles south of Sarasota.

Lawton Plans $5 to $6 Million Recreation Expansion

Lawton Recreation Commission backs a $5 million to $6 million plan to add two indoor recreation centers and a large outdoor sports complex. Hail and High Winds Dampen Lawton Area Storm

Thunderstorms with gale force winds passed over Lawton area Tuesday night, delivering hail to towns from Fletcher to Elgin while Lawton saw only a trace of rain. North winds up to 50 mph, a 95 degree high dropping to 76, uprooted trees near Elgin two miles north on US 277, and a range-fire near Fort Sill prompted fire watch.
