Boren vetoes section of liquor bill to protect small- business competition

Oklahoma Governor David Boren used a line item veto to strike a provision raising posting fees on imported beers from 100 to 500 dollars per brand, a move he said would stifle competition and harm a few firms. Wayne Hirst, owner of Hirst Imports, welcomed the veto as it preserves consumer choice in foreign beers. Hirst had argued the amendment targeted his Oklahoma City wholesale business importing 14 foreign beer brands.
