Oklahoma Safety Commission Plan Under Discussion
Oklahoma City January 24 A State Safety Council proposal to create a five member State Safety Commission to keep the highway patrol out of politics was discussed at a dinner hosted by Gov. Johnston Murray. The Oklahoma Press Association endorsed the plan and bills will be introduced in the Legislature soon. The plan would set five year terms with one vacancy yearly to limit gubernatorial control. The council favors moving the State Crime Bureau from the Safety Department and restricting troopers to traffic enforcement. The commission would hire a director and a fiscal officer. Critics note legislative pressure to cut agencies and question patronage effects. Governor Murray would name all five members if created.
