Gen Taylor to Leave Monday for War Post
Lt Gen Anthony C McAuliffe heads to a top Army post likely deputy chief of staff for operations and admin as Gen Maxwell Taylor moves to Korea to command the Eighth Army replacing Gen James Van Fleet. Taylor also met with President Eisenhower at the White House to discuss Korea.
Taylor Served At Sill In '30s And Visited In 1953
Lt Gen Maxwell D Taylor, a three star commander set to succeed Van Fleet as Eighth Army commander in Korea, previously served at Fort Sill in the 1930s as a field artilleryman and visited the Artillery School this week. He later toured Oklahoma City to see his parents, with a possible new assignment under Ike. The trip foreshadowed discussions with Eisenhower on bringing the Korean War to a conclusion while addressing ammunition and replacement issues. Taylor's career spans West Point Class of 1922, service with engineers then field artillery, and roles at the Military Academy and as superintendent 1945–1949. He held posts in China prior to WWII and with airborne divisions in World War II. Collins heads a Far East mission to assess the situation and will meet Clark, Van Fleet, and Taylor in Tokyo after front-line visits.
