Store Official Blames Buyers For High Meat Prices
Washington January 6 UPI a food chain official told the American National Cattlemen's Association that housewives are to blame for retail beef prices not following the cattle market decline. Roger B Corbett agricultural counsel of the National Association of Food Chains said insistence on prime and choice beef kept prices higher than wholesale trends. He cited Agriculture Department data showing November 1951 to November 1952 livestock prices fell $3.11 per 100 pounds while retail prices fell $3.18. Corbett said demand for steaks and roasts kept choice beef costly and chains plan to stock more lower grades to correct the situation.
