Budget Trims Hinged On Balanced Budget Says GOP Leaders
GOP leaders in Congress voiced cautious optimism for tax relief this year but tied any tax cuts to first balancing the federal budget. Charles Halleck said tax cut legislation would move only if a balanced budget is unlikely to be jeopardized. They emphasized cutting spending to balance income and outgo before any tax reductions. Truman's budget proposes about 79 billion in spending for fiscal 1954, roughly 10 billion more than projected revenue under current laws.
