Boren's Plan Draws Praise and Criticism in Oklahoma
Oklahoma lawmakers opened the 36th Legislature's second session to Gov. David Boren's proposed package drawing mixed reviews. The plan calls for an $814 million budget with $90 million new spending, inclining increases for common schools, higher education, and highways, plus a $300,000 request for an Oklahoma Water Development Authority. Critics call it weak or election-year pandering, while supporters praise its realism and focus on water, education, and local government. Farmers welcomed Boren’s stance but some lawmakers faulted his lack of concrete parity steps in the farmers' strike. The session targets a May completion as lawmakers seek to use available funds effectively.
