Weather outlook eases Lawton area with near 40 degree high and iceless showers. Forecasters expect a mild week start with partly cloudy skies and a Monday warmup. Icy roads remain dangerous overnight with drizzle and freezing temps in the 25 twenty eight range. Oklahoma totals reach up to .47 inch.
Three county jail inmates were held in a special cell after an escape bid thwarted Saturday morning. Jailer Benny Wallis said smugglers had supplied hacksaw blades to cut two bars in the west run around area. If the bars had been removed they could have escaped via a window with blankets tied together. One inmate’s wife admitted smuggling the blades. Two suspects face armed robbery charges from February 1. the third suspect’s status not specified.
The Air Force told Congress the buildup of Soviet long range bombers is substantially smaller than last year’s estimate. The downward revision is based on intelligence evaluated by the Air Force from overseas sources and was shared with the House Appropriations Committee during hearings on the military budget.
Maj. Gen. Thomas E. de Shate announced plans to extend aircraft maintenance at Fort Sill by a commercial contract with requests for proposals sent to multiple firms. Spartan Aircraft of Tulsa will not bid again for maintenance. about 400 former Spartan workers may be absorbed by a new contractor. The maintenance contract expires June 30, while the flight instrument school instructor contract remains unaffected.
The Heart Sunday collection drives from 2 to 4 pm mobilize about 30 volunteer women in Comanche County to door to door raise funds for the American Heart Fund. Across 5000 other communities similar efforts back the American Heart Association in the fight against heart disease. The Comanche County quota is 5600 as chaired by Mrs. Mary Pokorny. Contributions may be mailed to C. E. Price Jr if not at home.
Wichita Mountains Easter Service Association plans the 32nd pageant on April 21 with rehearsals starting March 3 at 2 30 PM in the Holy City of the Wichitas. Craig Pierson Millard Coody and Dr Tom Stanton will play Jesus with Ronald Thomas as the boy Jesus. Transportation will be provided from Walleck Memorial Church to the Holy City. Reading cast includes Reece Russell and Marjorie Russell with Marilyn Salyer Julia Fullerton Drake Cook and others. The reading cast meets March 3 at 7 30 PM at Jack Batten's home 1621 North 22nd.

A twin engine Aero Commander crashed into a field near El Rengo southwest of here killing James C. Moorman 41 of Muskogee. He was the sole occupant and an executive with J. W. Moorman Construction Co. Flo was the son of J. W. Moorman of Fort Worth Texas, leader of a major excavation firm.
Fort Knox reports 21 year old private first class Rolf von Reitzenstein, born in Norwalk, refuses a possible 40 million dollar inheritance to remain a U.S. citizen. He says no amount of wealth could replace American citizenship, after an ultimatum from his father to renounce nationality. He enlisted in Germany and later joined the U.S. Army to be American.
In Seoul on February 23, a high tide hampered the search for 17 U.S. Air Force servicemen missing after a Globemaster crash on the Han River sandbar. Five bodies recovered, 25 injured, 112 released. Rescue efforts paused at dusk, with salvage boats to raise the submerged bow section.
A bootlegger’s truck overturned on SH 33 near Claremore spilling whisky as motorists gathered to scoop up bottles before authorities arrived. Highway Patrolman Ty Cobb reported the collision involved James Vernon Houston of Oklahoma City and Frances Ann Worth of Catogsa, with delays before the scene was reported.

Rich and Walsh face separate court martial schedules while Jones and Carey face summary trials within a week. One recruit David L Porter of Hartford Vermont described being struck with an object resembling a hand cancelling stamp.
