AP reports two possible successors in the Democratic leadership, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia and Sen. Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, showing far more friendship than rivalry as talk grows on successors to Sen. Mike Mansfield who may step down in 1977. Byrd leverages favors to build influence despite criticism of crime and welfare stances, while Humphrey eyes the leadership after his presidential bids.
