Winter Weather Hits Oklahoma and Area

The first real taste of winter arrives with cloudy skies and threats of snow and freezing rain across Oklahoma. Early drizzle and freezing rain reported in McAlester Tulsa and Gage reduce visibility to under a mile in Tulsa and three miles in McAlester. Lawton experiences darkened skies but only light mist by noon. Forecast calls for occasional freezing drizzle or light snow through Friday with highs in the upper 30s and tonight’s low around 20.

Unit That Launched Horton's Career To Play Closing Role

Battery C of the 6th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, famed for firing the first shot in World War I, will act as honor battery in a ceremony marking Brig. Gen. John B. Horton’s retirement after 32 years of service. Horton began his career with Battery C in 1923 after West Point and returns for the closing phase as the unit participates in the salute at Fort Sill. The battery’s historic first shot in 1917 helped kick off American involvement in World War I, a moment commemorated alongside the unit’s long lineage from 1798 through World War II and its postwar evolution.

Warrant Officer Mendell Dies By Own Action At Fort Sill

Warrant Officer William C. Mendell of Headquarters 617th Field Artillery Battalion was found dead in his car on Harper Road near Building 5455 at Fort Sill. Preliminary military police findings indicate self-inflicted wounds with an autopsy pending. Mendell, 36, lived at 1808 Floyd Lawton with his wife Hattie Elizabeth and had over 14 years of service. He arrived at Fort Sill July 12.

Savage Gales Lash The British Isles

Savage gales with gusts up to 70 miles an hour lashed the British Isles halting ocean liners and forcing small craft to shelter. Winds swept across the York shire moors overturning trucks and uprooting trees as a damaged building collapsed in Bootle narrowly missing a policeman. Torrential rains triggered major traffic jams in Lancashire and surrounding areas.

Missing Omaha Sailor Pederson Parents Arrive

Mrs Van Conett mother of Edward Elbert Pederson 22 who has been missing since Nov 1 arrived in Hobart with her husband and Mrs Carter to aid the search Undersheriff Walter Roland said Pederson may have had a blackout and be wandering. The missing sailor is said to have a service-connected injury and the family seeks help in locating him.

Nike Missile Units Slated For Europe

The Nike anti air craft guided missile is the next advanced weapon likely to be sent to Europe to strengthen western defenses. The missile itself probably will not be sent overseas for more than a year. Launching sites including underground storage rooms will be built in the interim. The supersonic missile already protects 18 major U.S. cities and will be assigned to U.S. forces in Europe to guard bases in Germany.

Montreal report says the surviving Dionne quintuplets will live independently and not return home for New Year. Two Men Die In Private Plane Crash Near Londonderry

Two men were killed when a two engine private plane exploded and crashed in the Guernsey County hills about a mile northwest of Londonderry. The Gulf Refining Co. aircraft was en route from Tulsa to Pittsburgh. Fire crews arrived as two bodies were recovered from the wreckage.

Sheriff reports about 25 inmates staged a pre New Year celebration by sawing through a jail wall to access liquor in solitary confinement. Brisk party afterward yielded only 12 bottles of wine but sparked a jail search that recovered two hacksaw blades hidden in Christmas gift packages.
