CHICAGO experts project a record New Year weekend traffic toll. The National Safety Council estimates 420 Americans will be killed on streets and roads during the three day celebration unless driving habits improve sharply from the prior weekend.
The Associated Press reports Oklahoma's Christmas holiday toll reaching 15 fatalities in a three day span. A 28 year old airman, Gene Moffett of Ger ty, died in a two car collision near Calvin, and 27 year old Robert Arnold Slaughterback died from injuries after a Copan area crash. The tally raises the year total to 587, with officials projecting up to 420 more deaths in future holidays.
Private Chester Frobase Jr. of Fort Sill died in a single vehicle wreck on U.S. 60 west of Poplar Bluff Missouri. A second passenger also died and a third was injured. Pfc. Kenneth C. Roll of Fort Campbell Kentucky was killed. Charles W. Miller II of Aberdeen Proving Grounds Maryland was injured. Frobase, 71, an aviation mechanic, had enlisted in 1953 and served in 52nd Field Artillery Group. He had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was home on leave after Exercise Sage Brush.
Preston Williams, 45, desk sergeant at police headquarters, was rushed to Fort Sill hospital Tuesday after his doctor diagnosed a heart attack. He had been ill for three days at home at 11 N. 28th and was placed under oxygen.
E K Gaylord publisher of The Daily Oklahoman denied a recent editorial disparaged Lawton in a letter to Mayor C R Ellsworth. The piece criticized Fort Sill land issue and warned about economic threats to Lawton as a result of military payrolls.
Kiowa County sheriff E. O. Peters reports a sailor’s duffel bag found near a farm pond contained discharge papers for Edward Elbert Tedersen a 22 year old from Omaha Nebraska. Tedersen’s uncle H E Horrocks arrived from Putnam Dewey County and says the youth planned to visit last month but has not been seen since. Authorities fear foul play and will drag the pond if he is not located soon. Reports say Tedersen was discharged from the Coast Guard last April 1.
President Eisenhower arrived in Key West for about two weeks of rest as doctors urge sunny warm weather to aid his convalescence from the Sept. 24 heart attack. He will stay at the Boca Chica Naval Air Station complex and may be joined later by Gen. Alfred M. Gruenther.
Northern California faced the worst floods in state history with 34 known deaths and 19 to 35 missing. Army Navy Air Force and Coast Guard crews saved lives as damage rose to 150 million dollars. Over a million acres were underwater and 31 inches of rain fell last week. Authorities planned rapid rehabilitation and Guards were deployed to Yuba City and Marysville as rail service returned to normal.
Atlanta experts warn that fresh air speeds no sobering effect after heavy drinking. Dr. Theo dore Koppanyi of Georgetown University Medical School notes five to six hours to burn four ounces of whisky and that pure oxygen does not reliably hasten sobering. He mentions insulin or sugar may help, with fructose showing promise, honey possibly aiding sobering, and outlines blood alcohol ranges and lethal risks.
Nominations for the 1955 Lawton Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award are being accepted. Blanks were sent to city civic club presidents, with judging on a six point basis for young men under 36 who have shown lasting community or state impact and leadership.
Forecasters warn a cold front from Colorado will plunge Oklahoma panhandle temperatures below freezing tonight with windy, chilly conditions. Thursday may see light showers as highs slip to 65 to 70 today and tonight.
Montreal reports show the four surviving Dionne sisters facing a family rift as Marie and Annette plan to go home for New Year while Cecile and Yvonne work. Cecile and Yvonne will take a three day holiday, while Oliva Dionne, the father, laments the lack of Christmas contact from the girls and cites outside influence. Yvonne denies her father’s accusations, crying when informed.
John Bluford Barnett aged 62 of Route 4 Walters died at 9:33 am from burns received when a gasoline filled tractor backfired and ignited his clothing. He suffered burns over about 70 percent of his body. Mrs. Barnett aided and was burned slightly. He was taken to Southwestern Hospital in Lawton after initial aid. Born in Darby Oklahoma on July 20 1903 he moved to Chickasha as a boy and later lived in the Hulen community.
Brig. Gen. John B. Horton retires after 33 years of service. A 9:45 a.m. ceremony at Fort Sill in front of McNair Hall will include an Army citation. Brig. Gen. John F. Bird will succeed Horton as deputy commanding general.
Lemons 35 of 308 Ferris was jailed Tuesday on a bench warrant for failing to serve a 10 day sentence and pay a 100 dollar fine after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated. Judge Harper ordered a 500 dollar property bond forfeited, signed by Loyd R. Lemons and A. R. Adkins.

New Delhi Prime Minister Nehru sent a formal cabinet note criticizing Soviet Premier Bulganin and Communist chief Khrushchev for speeches during a tour here. The note notes great difficulty in soft-pedaling their remarks while affirming India's neutrality in the cold war.
Superior Court Judge Robert S. Landers gave Orville Lindsay Chambless a 60 day extension to file an appeal from the October hijacking conviction that sent him five years in prison. Attorney Dave Tant sought the delay after depositing for trial transcript records required before appellate filing. The case stems from the October 19 1954 robbery on a country road northeast of Lawton involving Albion Henry Potts Jr.
