One year old Nancy Lee, daughter of Mr and Mrs Oliver Lee, listened intently as Santa spoke of her Christmas stocking. More than 1500 youngsters attended the Yale party after a downtown parade on the Comanche county courthouse lawn.
Israel warned Egyptian Premier Gamal Abdel Nasser that if you want war we are ready. Egypt accused Israel of a Gaza Strip attack in a 20 minute battle and said there were no Egyptian casualties. UN mixed armistice commission filed a formal complaint. Syrian students strike to oppose Jordan joining the Baghdad pact. Reports from Damascus say emergency declared in Jordan after Friday riots leaving 40 police and soldiers dead or wounded.
Lawton district investigators raided a farmhouse off S H 7 about five miles east of Lawton and seized 1092 bottles of whisky wine and gin. County Attorney Manville Redman and Deputy Sheriff Arvil Roberson led the operation which required help to move the contraband to the courthouse. A 33 year old woman Mrs Bob Latham was booked in county jail and later released on 250 cash bond. Redman said another bootlegging suspect may be involved and that most liquor came from a trailer behind the farm residence.
Gett ys burg Pa December 17 heart specialist Paul Dudley White declared President Eisenhower out of danger after his September heart attack but avoided the second term issue. He said with average luck and care the President could live many years and stay active though the future is in the lap of the gods. White reported excellent progress and that true recovery would be clearer by mid February. He noted the decision on a second term rests with Eisenhower, not doctors, and the President likely will delay the State of the Union and travel south after Christmas for about two weeks before resuming duties around Jan 9.
Santa arrived for the Jaycee Christmas party amid a crowd of 1,500 children hoping for handshakes and whispers. Cy Bell and son Terry led a Christ in Christmas parade with religious floats from area churches, while 5,000 oranges and candy sticks were distributed.
A series of quakes struck Imperial Valley California with a 11:05 am and 11:15 am shocks on Saturday causing window breakage buckled pilings and broken pipes. No injuries or major damage reported though the All American Canal area faced threats to its water link and urban structures sustained light damage.
Lawton grows as a medical hub in southwest Oklahoma with 13 specialists and two up to date hospitals. Local doctors credit geographic location and plentiful nurses for rapid growth and future moves by more specialists. Kiowa Indian hospital north of Lawton serves state residents.
Beaumont and across Texas report a string of disasters that left 33 people dead. Four elderly nursing home residents died in a blaze at Beaumont, while five football fans perished in a Hallettsville head on collision. Belton, McAllen, and other incidents raised the total with multiple fire, traffic, cold exposure, a fall, and a shooting death. Names of victims include Emma L. Harper and Clem entine Holmes among others. authorities tally further fatalities.
In Buenos Aires on December 17, a provisional government crackdown led by Gen. Pedro Aramburu arrested about 500 suspects in a sweeping conspiracy sweep. Raids began yesterday and by tonight the drive was largely complete with 50 to 100 expected to remain in custody. An official report is anticipated tomorrow.
Police probe after a brutal slash attack on Francis Bates and multiple stab wounds to Fort Sill prizefighter Jose Tafoya, with a quick arrest of Katherine Wooten. The incidents occurred within minutes and blocks of each other as officers investigated the violence.
Representative Victor Wickersham of Oklahoma said he will press Monday for extra defense money in the new administration budget. He aims to secure funds for Fort Sill and Clinton Sherman and Altus Air Force Bases, including hangars runways and fuel facilities, with meetings planned with Army and Air Force secretaries and senators Kerr and Monroney. He left Oklahoma City for Washington in the early afternoon.
Twelve helicopter pilots of the Army Aviation Unit Training Command left Fort Sill for Fort Rucker Alabama Saturday where they will obtain six H-19 Sikorsky helicopters for training. The crew is led by Capt Earl J Hammack and the six choppers raise AAUTC H 19s to eight. The aircraft were reassigned from Fort Benning where the unit trained for H 34 transition.
