ARRY DONOHUE of the Interior Department arrived for a on the spot inspection of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. He said a satisfactory solution is possible as negotiations continue with the Army over use of 10,700 acres for Fort Sill expansion. Donohue stressed wildlife remains the primary purpose while avoiding unsafe public closures and preserving defense needs.

Fire damages county agent office storage room

An early morning fire at the county agent’s office destroyed a small records storage room in the basement at the courthouse. Fire Captain Jim Martin said investigators could not determine the cause, with the 5:22 a.m. report and blaze confined to the storage area.

Sills Sage Brush Units Start Home

Lawton families will be reunited next week as 3000 Fort Sill troops in Exercise Sage Brush at Fort Polk Louisiana start returning home. The 64th Ordnance Battalion arrived at Fort Sill’s Artillery and Guided Missile Center at 5 p.m. Wednesday. First men back were six enlisted from the 2nd Field Artillery Battery and the battalion had been slated to return Sunday. Next arrivals include the First Ordnance Company and the 932nd Field Artillery Observation.

Blind-In-Law Killer Confesses After Fatal Shot

HEALDTON Okla a 55 year old former convict admitted killing his blind brother in law with a .20 gauge shotgun yesterday four hours after the incident. He said the death stemmed from family trouble and surrendered in his car about a mile north of Ringling. His wife Davie was the only witness.

Thief Flops After Failed Car Theft at Stimpson Motor

City detectives traced a reported auto theft to Stimpson Motor Co where a 1952 Chevrolet vanished from the No 11 S11th lot. The would be thief first attempted another Chevrolet and used a common theft ruse but proved unable to profit from the scheme.

Navy Plane Crash Leaves 7 Missing

A two engine Navy patrol bomber crashed at sea near 26 miles east of Kauai. Three of the 10 aboard were rescued by a submarine Bashaw.Seven submarines and four planes searched the flare lit ocean for the seven missing airmen. Survivors identified as Lt. K. C. Guedel pilot Lt. (j.g.) E. J. O'Malley co pilot and Lt. (j.g.) Robert S. Smith navigator.

Negro Shot as Woman Is Detained by Police

Police hold a 24 year old white woman for investigation of the shooting of a Negro man, James Crumpton, as he left a tavern at 205 N First. Crumpton was treated at Fort Sill hospital and released with instructions to see a physician. A taxi driver said the shooting was done by the suspect, who denied involvement. Detectives sought the victim for questioning later today.

School Official Guilty in Meeker Rape Case

A district court jury found Clyde Foster, former Meeker superintendent, guilty of raping a pupil. Jurors deliberated eight hours and sentenced were left to District Judge Don Powers.

National Commander Asked To Probe State Legion Kingmakers

Oklahoma City The national commander of the American Legion was asked to investigate the Oklahoma department after Alex Pope of Kingfisher charged a small coalition of kingmakers led by Elmer Fraker and supported by Charles Hashall and Raymond Trapp has taken control. Pope criticized the Tulsa state convention as undemocratic and accused leaders of violating the organization’s constitution. Hashall denied being under Fraker’s dictate.

City Fund Drive To End Dec 15

Lawton Fort Sill United Fund Red Cross drive will end on December 15, executive director Charles H. Gallaher announced to The campaign cabinet and agency heads met Wednesday. Charlie Wade handed out uncleared campaign cards to agency heads for clearance and reporting by the deadline. The drive stands at 85 percent of a $96,314 goal.

Three teen-age sisters provoked a major clash with Oklahoma City police, leaving officers with bite marks and a chased pursuit.
