Energy Bill Faces Final Committee Vote Before Adjournment
The Commerce Committee schedules a final vote on the energy bill for Friday to push the measure to the House floor before adjournment. About 60 amendments remain as Chairman Harley C. Staggers orders morning and afternoon sessions amid GOP objections to the Eckhardt amendment. Rep Clarence J. Brown pressed to kill the bill, saying the amendment would nullify other emergency energy powers. The bill requires White House energy conservation plans to take effect unless vetoed within 15 days, a provision echoed in the Senate version.
