Court Won't Order Prince Edward County Schools Reopen
A federal appeals court refused to require Prince Edward County Virginia to reopen its public schools. The 4th Circuit said Virginia state courts must rule first on state law questions, with a Virginia Supreme Court hearing planned later this year. The decision follows a 1962 ruling that kept county schools closed to avoid desegregation. Difficult constitutional questions remain unresolved.

Hood Career As Alabama Student Ended
The withdrawal of Negro student James A Hood from the University of Alabama may end his brief enrollment two months after he entered. His attorney said Hood dropped out due to physical and mental condition. The university confirmed the withdrawal and a board meeting to consider charges was canceled. Hood faced charges of conspiring with a news conference to break a student rule and claims against officials and a dormitory incident. The case could bar fall admission. Hood remains subject to a hearing before any decision. Malone remains the only Negro student on campus. Lucy had been expelled earlier. Hood’s attorney urged rest and advised him not to speak to newsmen.
