Lawton Pioneer Day Parade Celebrates Growth and History
Lawton marked its 54th Pioneer Day with a colorful parade featuring horses and floats showcasing pioneer life. The event, sponsored by the Pioneer Women’s Club, awarded a $20 prize to the Junior IOOF and Theta Rho girls for the best float, with donations directed to the IOOF Home for Children. Second prize went to the Southwestern Beauticians Association for Beauty Through The Ages. A gregarious Pioneer picnic followed at Union Park with a grand feast and reminiscences by Lawton leaders highlighting the city’s growth to become Oklahoma’s third largest municipality.

Rain clouds eased from Oklahoma early Saturday leaving dry conditions in the southwest through Sunday. The weather bureau predicted fair skies with afternoon cloudiness and near 100 degrees after a low around 70 to 75. Friday rains brought relief to cotton crops, with Lawton area receiving up to 1.10 inches south of the city and Lakes Lawton reporting no rain. Local officials remembered pioneer leaders and veterans at a Pioneer Day program in Comanche County, with tributes from judges and legislators and a memorial list noting 65 pioneers since 1954.

Girl Stows Away Aboard Destroyer
A 16 year old Hawaiian girl stowed away aboard the Canadian destroyer Athabaskan at Pearl Harbor. Discovered on the ship nearing Long Beach, she may have disguised herself as a sailor and sought to join the Wacs or women Marines. The commander, eager to reach port, steered the vessel toward Long Beach.

Funds Campaign To Open Oct 17 In Lawton drive goals set
The 1955 56 United Fund Red Cross drive starts October 17 with a goal of 88 633. The cabinet and nine civic club presidents in Lawton organized divisions and chairmen to head each category. The goal was reduced from 95 503 after American Cancer Society and Girl Scouts withdrew.

Fort Hood Texas hosts two week summer encampment for 160 Lawton and Comanche county men of the 45th Infantry division. Lawton Budget Aims for City Improvements 1955-56
Lawton's record making 1955 56 city budget of 1 109 000 will not fund every request but will add four police and four fire department personnel. Firemen total 51 recommended with repairs equipment and building work. Police budgets include radar units mobile radios and vehicles. A 125 mile per hour hurricane fringe brushed Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Saturday. The Miami Weather Bureau located its center 125 miles northeast of San Juan at 4 p.m. est with gusts to 70 mph in San Juan. Gale winds hit the Virgin Islands as warnings spread to the Dominican Republic and the southeastern Bahamas. The storm, three days old, moved west-northwest at 15 mph, about 1,070 miles east-southeast of Miami, en route to the U.S. mainland.

Lawton Police Nab Four After Downtown Robbery
Four Negro men and two others were arrested after a daylight robbery and beating of A Earl Miller 17 a Sheppard Air Force Base youth in Lawton Oklahoma. Miller was forced into a car and robbed of about 120 dollars as the car moved from the Downbeat club toward Second Street. Suspects were captured at a Texas patrol roadblock near Burkburnett and turned over to Sheppard authorities.
