Russia demands return of top Soviet UN employee
The Soviet government accuses the CIA of holding Arkady N Shevchenko under duress and demands his return while accusing the US press of covering up involvement in his disappearance. Shevchenko’s lawyer says he is in voluntary seclusion near New York awaiting a meeting with Kurt Waldheim. A daughter identifies herself as his, stating he wants to stay in the United States. The State Department has no comment on the Soviet charge. The Soviet mission to the UN says the case shows premeditated provocation by US intelligence and seeks his transfer to the USSR. Tass cites a propaganda campaign in the American press. Russian protest was discussed with Secretary of State Cyrus Vance. He left his UN post a week ago over differences with Moscow but intends no return.
