Treatment of Rabies by Hoang-nan Prevention Report

The Gazette Medicale de Nantes notes twenty four rabies cases treated with hoang-nan by Dr Barthelemy and others from 1882 to 1885. In several cases bites were on hands, treatment often lacked immediate cauterization. Some patients showed rabic symptoms but did not develop hydrophobia or die. Doses ranged from six to eight grams daily with gradual tapering. The author suggests rabies may be rarer in humans or that the remedy may alter nervous systems to prevent virus evolution.
