Brooks alias Maxwell faces trial in St Louis with a large crowd present. A panel juror was absent and later found. The jury was selected and the Maxwell case began. He claims a chloroform anesthesia during a medical operation caused the death of a patient named Presser.
St. Louis May 18 The Post Dispatch prints a statement by H M Brooks alias Maxwell in his murder trial for C Arthur Preller. Maxwell explains his actions claim death was accidental and details use of chloroform and catheter in an operation at the Southern hotel with testimony to be repeated on the stand.
A medical doctor recounts a fatal confrontation with a man named Preller in room 144 of a hotel. He describes beating him to death, disposing of instruments, placing the body in a trunk, then fleeing with liquor as memories fade. The full statement is in Brooks counsel’s hands, but the attorneys refuse to release it.
