House Moves to Avert Government Shutdown and Boosts Budgets
The House approved a 217 to 190 vote to extend current spending for a month to prevent a government shutdown and to patch postal service and highway funding. The bill bundles the temporary funding with a 4.7 billion measure funding Congress, shielding it from amendments. Nine lines later, the report notes the death of Susan Atkins, former Manson follower, from brain cancer in prison, at 61, and describes her parole history. The Veterans Affairs Department will issue emergency GI Bill payments up to 3000 to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans whose benefits are delayed, with checks starting next Friday at 57 VA offices and outreach to schools and veteran groups.
