Birth control for men eyed in clinical trial push
KU Medical Center researcher Joseph Tash leads the Interdisciplinary Center for Male Contraceptive Research and Drug Development in a project to test H2-gamendazole as a male birth control pill. He began work in the late 1960s to share reproductive responsibility with women, noting current male options are limited to abstinence, condoms or vasectomy. The pill could be 100 percent effective with no side effects in nonhuman studies, though actual results await FDA preclinical testing. Sperm production would stop in about three weeks, with fertility recovery in eight to ten weeks. The work has garnered national attention with trials planned pending regulatory steps.
