Anchorage seeks united front against rape of Native women
Native groups and police form a coalition to combat rape and sexual assault of Alaska Native women in Anchorage. Five Native women were slain in 15 months, with a sixth may be connected, as efforts include rural education, bar bathroom signs, wallet cards, and bartender training to spot predators. Native women are 3.5 percent of residents but about 45 percent of rape victims, though reporting increases may reflect safer reporting. The effort aims to reduce harm and shift view of rape as a Native problem, with downtown bars engaged in prevention.
