Lawrence tax receipts show a 4.2 percent year to date rise over last year, but momentum faded with August data reflecting a 1 percent drop. The Kansas Department of Revenue notes most growth occurred early in the year as overall totals trail last year’s pace.
Town Talk notes a slight drop in August sales tax with fears the 2015 growth may not meet the revised 5 percent budget. City staff warn adjustments could be needed if 2015 underperforms, impacting 2016 targets while comparing Lawrence to other large Kansas retail centers. Angela Elam, 2014-15 Simons Public Humanities Fellow, spoke to about 30 in Hall Center for the Humanities on how narrative shapes storytelling in public media. She highlighted interviews with Natasha Trethewey, David Sedaris and Luis Alberto Urrea, and discussed radio’s intimate nature and multiple storytelling approaches.
Adina Morse will leave the Lawrence Schools Foundation executive director post effective October 12 after serving since July 2014. During her tenure the foundation expanded the student only performance program with Lied Center, formed a partnership with Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocates, and improved digital branding. Morse will join Associates in Dispute Resolutions as a mediator starting October 13. The board of Gail Vick praised her contributions and will set a timeline for hiring her replacement.
