Western Civ under fire at KU debate over bias

KU faculty edited Patterns In Western Civilization faces criticism from KC Baptist Temple linked group KCBT Student Ministries which ran a full page ad in the student paper. Ward Nitz says the course undercuts the Bible while professor James Woelfel defends it and a campus forum on Wednesday aims to address concerns. The two semester course centers on primary Western sources and their relation to Bible perspectives, with Woelfel noting unexamined beliefs are valuable.

Public private effort said key to housing Lawrence

City housing leaders call for public private partnerships to expand affordable housing and reduce homelessness. The Homeowners Out of Tenants program has aided two low income families with city grants and private bank loans. A public hearing at the Lawrence Public Library discussed housing needs for the elderly and homeless, with a city plan to update HUD funded strategies by year end. Senator Sandy Praeger urged Medicaid reform to free funds for housing and homelessness programs and noted average rents in Lawrence.

Great American Rubber Duck Race Adoption Drive

Duck adoptions are open for the Great American Rubber Duck Race to benefit Cottonwood Inc. The 12 p.m. Saturday event starts at Clinton Dam with about 10 000 ducks racing down the north side of the Clinton outlet channel for prizes. Adoption is a 5 donation.

Area winners at state fair take top honors in Hutchinson

Kansas State Fair outcomes feature Lawrence area participants earning multiple top awards as the event concluded. Winners include Michael Wyman Baldwin third in peach pie. Jeff Johnson Eudora third in early junior yearling bull. Sloan Acres Lawrence third in several ram and ewe categories. Candace Braksick McLouth second in gelding under age four. Dawn Kramer Meriden third in crafts. Shawna New Leavenworth second in April junior yearling bulls. Liga Robie and Chris Leach Linwood second in multiple Holstein classes with several third place finishes.

Corporate Cup fund raiser set at Lawrence High School

The 1993 Lawrence Corporate Cup runs 7 30 a m to 5 30 p m Saturday in the Lawrence High School west gymnasium. Eleven teams of employees and spouses from local companies will compete in 18 events. Funds support the Kansas Special Olympics Indoor Sports Tournament East in Lawrence November 12 13.

Grass-roots group aims to trim debt in Lawrence chapter

Lawrence residents plan to form the Lawrence chapter of the Concord Coalition a national grass-roots effort led by former senators Paul Tsongas and Warren Rudman to cut the federal deficit by 2000 through entitlement relief tax increases and spending cuts. The local meeting is 7 to 8 30 p m Monday at the Lawrence Public Library.
