Forrest E. and Sally Roney Hoglund of Dallas pledged 1.5 million to KU Endowment Association to support the KU School of Engineering and KU baseball. One third funds Hoglund Laboratory endowment, 250 000 creates Hoglund Fellowship. 450 000 remains unrestricted. County moves to form sewer district west of Lawrence
Douglas County commissioners began steps to create the West Branch Yankee Tank Sanitary Sewer District to cover 2,017 acres in a 3 square mile area west of Lawrence. A resolution for approval on Oct. 11 would set land exclusions and future entry rules while outlining a second public hearing.

Lawrence group wins drug grant for treatment centers
Five communities including Lawrence receive 945000 in state grants to create alcoholism and drug addiction treatment centers for homeless persons. The funds, from the 1989 Legislature, support about 200 people annually and ease waiting lists, with projects ranging from a 15 bed women and children program in Topeka to halfway houses for men and women in Abilene Newton Pittsburg and Kansas City Kansas.
