Timber preservation method wins long-term use in mines

A French mining engineer developed a simple cheap method to preserve timber for mine roofs. A pit holds timber with nick-lime sprinkled over it, then water is added and the timber is exposed for several days before use. Timbers treated last for years, far outlasting untreated wood.

An easy method to render timber durable or nearly indestructible has great value for farms. Lime acts as a preservative by coagulating the albumen in timber cells, helping fence posts sills and other exposed timber resist decay under normal conditions.
