Fire damages two Berkeley Flats. 14 residents displaced

A late Tuesday blaze at two Berkeley Flats buildings on Ind 1123 in Lawrence forced evacuation of 12 apartments and left 14 residents displaced, with Red Cross providing temporary housing. Firefighters brought the fire under control by 10:50 p.m. No injuries reported. University help offered for affected KU students including class notification and supplies. Cause and damage estimates undetermined.

Art library reopens after flood damage at KU

The Murphy Art and Architecture Library at the Spencer Museum of Art reopened after a water line break on August 1 flooded the home, damaging about ten percent of the 170000 volumes. About 9200 damaged items have been returned from Chicago with others pending fall shipment, cost and repair scope undetermined.

World Company names Mark Potts top news executive

Mark Potts, veteran online news leader and cofounder of WashingtonPost.com, named vice president of content at The World Company publisher of the Lawrence Journal-World. He will oversee print and online operations starting Oct. 1 and aims to deliver high quality reporting across formats in Lawrence and northeast Kansas. Potts previously helped launch WashingtonPost.com and led digital initiatives at The Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Examiner and Washington Post.
