U S Eighth Army reports an allied armored infantry dawn assault on a hill mass west of Chorwon was checked by dug in Reds. Claims show heavy fighting in mud and rain with Reds holding bunkers and trenches amid mortar and artillery fire. Other western front patrols faced little contact.
The 48th Vinland fair starts Thursday north of Vinland High School with two divisions for entrants under and over ten. Cash prizes will be awarded in both divisions. Entries include competitors from Clinton, Lawrence, Lecompton, Baldwin, and Vinland. Events feature opening and closing numbers by Vinland High and Consolidated Grade School, with Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and Baldwin Commercial Club sponsoring programs on Friday and opening night respectively. Judging for nets and displays begins, with dairy cattle judged Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Exhibits, aside from stock, remain in place until 5 p.m. Saturday.
Senator Schoeppel of Kansas accuses President Truman of delaying legislation for a small defense plants administration. He notes Senate passage on June 4 and urges action on a nonpartisan amendment to protect thousands of small businesses amid mobilization efforts.
Twenty nine inmates at the Kansas Beloit industrial school have escaped in two weeks and four remain at large. Director Arthur A. Martin cites policy changes and staff additions aimed at placing girls in outside jobs. A Sunday night escape involved 12 girls, the largest in weeks. Police arrested two inmates identifying as Kathleen Reed and Betty Elmore after a grounds search. Officials plan meetings to explain the placement system and uphold the honor system.
Washington reports Chairman George predicts a formal version of the $5.9 billion tax bill will be ready for senate action tomorrow after a 3 a.m. meeting to approve a report on tax increases from closed sessions. The House passed a $7.2 billion annual hike. Truman asked for $10 billion. McFarland plans early sessions to avoid night sessions. Taft warns the Republican policy committee is pessimistic about premiers quitting before October.
Washington reports a house appropriations subcommittee will hear tomorrow on President Truman's request for 400 million dollars for Midwest flood relief. Chairman Norrell says the first witness is A. E. Howse, a special rep for defense mobilization chief Charles E. Wilson, who coordinated agency reports on flood damages and federal aid needs. The hearing will be closed to reporters and the public.
Topeka Sept 18 The Kansas Power and Light company asks the state corporation commission to extend a 10 percent surcharge on rates for three years. The surcharge, in effect since 1949, now applies to all Kansas Power and Light properties including Kansas Electric Power in Lawrence. Extension would raise rates 10 percent for those customers until December 31 1954.
In Boston, Sept. 18, the Cleveland Indians beat the Red Sox 6-4 as Mike Garcia weathered a ninth inning rally to secure a crucial win in the opening game of a two game set. Detroit Tigers topped the Philadelphia Athletics 6-? with homers by Steve Souchock and Hoot Evers, extending their strong hitting in today’s action.
A devastating blast at the Shell Oil refinery in Wood River Illinois killed 13 workers and seriously injured about 20 others. Four bodies were recovered at the scene, with nine more dying in hospitals. Names of the dead include Malcom Curtis and Edward Graner among others. A flash fire reached eighty feet, fires were suppressed by company firefighters, and cause remains undetermined after the second major incident at the plant in less than a month.

Five Lawrence students are among 116 musicians chosen by KU band director Russell L Wiley. The players, all men, include Eula Bell Skillman David Jones Arthur Nease Roger Beth and Dick Fritz. The band will perform in Hoch auditorium for concerts and activities. Wiley notes the ensemble is about the same size as last year. Separately Anna Seana Tom Page, a Topekan and KU alumnus, earned a PhD in political science from the University of Minnesota and joined the University of Illinois faculty this fall.

Ottawa report says the Atlantic Council paused debate on admitting Greece and Turkey to full NATO membership to obtain Copenhagen instructions. Denmark and Norway requested more guidance while other members appeared ready to support the proposal. U S officials expected Denmark and Norway would join if asked.
KU ROTC programs in air force and army are now open to upperclassmen with deferred draft advantages. Lt. Col. Moore and Col. Kumpe announced, noting navy ROTC remains unaffected. Students may complete ROTC in two years by taking four courses, two per term, upon formal enrollment and meeting standards.
St Louis Sept 18 Major General George F. E. Armstrong surgeon general reports the mortality rate among wounded soldiers reaching battalion aid stations in the Korean war is a little more than half the World War II figure. He says 25 die per 1000 in Korea versus 45 in World War I and 9 in World War II.
Advert says a 14 inch television set is now $188 in a Goodrich ad. The brief notice highlights a clear price drop and local retailer push for home electronics.
McPherson Kansas Sept 8 police blotter recalls a past runaway on Main Street involving a team of horses and a wagon owned by Frank Hein not present. The wagon rested by the railroad tracks when the frightened horses pulled the wagon into a parked car. Bystanders halted the horse team.
Dorothy Lou O Neal aged six or seven fell through a wooden lid on the back porch well and dropped feet first into a shallow pool. Her father Charles W. O Neal pulled her out in under five minutes with only minor injuries. She suffered an ankle sprain and cuts but will see a doctor for a full checkup. Neighbors aided and she cried briefly before being consoled.
Washington Sept 18 Congress gave final approval to a 5.861 billion military construction program to bolster defenses against Russia. The measure authorizes hundreds of air bases depots training camps and other installations at home and abroad awaiting funding. The air force accounts for about 2.48 billion including roughly 1 billion for secret overseas bases surrounding Russia.
King George VI has developed a serious lung ailment prompting Queen Elizabeth to return from Scotland to be at his side. The Lawrence city commission schedules its regular weekly meeting for 8:20 a.m. tomorrow in the commission chamber at City Hall, Eleventh and Massachusetts. New York stock index closed with 60 stocks at 99.9, down .2.
Senator McMahon called for all out mass production to equip an atomic army, claiming it would save 30 billion annually and deter Russia. He proposed two resolutions to back U S atomic development and a UN disarmament session, noting past UN failure over inspections. He cited 3130 million spent last year on the program.
Topeka reports the weather bureau expects increasing cloudiness across Kansas with no rain through tomorrow. Warmer highs around the lower 80s and nightly lows in the 50s are anticipated. Rivers remain well below bankfull after no precipitation in the past 24 hours. Temperatures statewide yesterday were mostly in the 70s, Garden City peaking at 81, Hill City a low of 41.

Five thousand U S fighting men from army navy and air force will undergo atomic warfare indoctrination at the Frenchman Flats Nevada proving ground. A battalion combat team will establish a battlefield dig trenches and dugouts and wire before each explosion then retreat to safe positions while blast and heat recorders and Geiger counters document effects.
State highway dept engineer Hugh Sheridan says emergency access will be maintained during West Sixth street work. Intersections north of the trafficway are limited, with Maine Michigan and Clinois crossings in use for now. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed at the Sixth and Indiana crossing. vehicular use expected by noon tomorrow. The project aims to minimize delays while completing a 24 foot paving strip and temporary planking will protect the surface. Officials promise to open alternate arteries if a major emergency arises and to keep inconveniences short.
About 1,700 freshmen were inducted as KU opened classes with a North College hill and Memorial Stadium ceremony. Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy, installed earlier, spoke on truth and light. The event included a bonfire story, a fire ceremony, oaths, and performances by the KU band and glee clubs. Regents and alumni meetings followed in Union Building Strong Hall.
