President Johnson directed federal aid to hurricane torn Louisiana with $2 million in initial assistance as officials report 52 known dead and coroner updates on the death toll. White House measures aim to mobilize men money and materials for relief.
Community supporters urge a new bank to serve west Lawrence and future growth areas citing consumer loans and local ownership. Opponents warn a fourth bank would reduce lending capacity and raise service charges, with timelines of four to six years to profitability and questions about applicants' banking experience.
Kansas insurance commissioner Frank Sullivan warns citizens over 65 not to cancel or change private health insurance due to the new Medicare program. He notes Medicare provides no protections before July 1966 and urges contacting the Topeka office or local Social Security for questions. He cautions against early signup offers claiming discounts.
The Oklahoma Supreme Court dismissed disbarment actions against former Kansas governor Payne H. Ratner Sr. and his son Payne H. Ratner Jr. after they agreed not to represent Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen members in Oklahoma and to refrain from soliciting law business there.
Duane E. Pope, 22, of Roxbury Kansas, charged with bank robbery and murder, will go to trial in Lincoln on November 1. Federal District Judge Robert Van Pelt set the date after Pope requested Lincoln as the venue.
Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. of Harvard will speak at 8 p.m. February 15 in Hoch Auditorium as part of the Student Union Activities featured speakers series. KU seniors John Sapp chairs the SUA committee arranging the event. The author and Kennedy biographer has won the Pulitzer Prize and Guggenheim Fellowship and contributes to major publications.
City Manager Ray Wells announced George Williams will join the utilities department as assistant director starting September 20. Williams, a registered civil engineer and former Lawrence city engineer, will handle construction details in water plant and water mains, freeing director Bob Muunsey for new projects.
Robert Theodore Bobilin is appointed assistant professor of religion at Kansas University He will teach two courses in the Kansas School of Religion and one in the Sociology Department His specialties include Christian ethics and East Asian religions His appointment is funded by Kansas Methodist conferences He earned a Ph D from Southern California University in 1960 and has held Hill Foundation and State Department grants for Orient study His wife Dorothy is a California social worker They have three children Cynthia Steven and Peggy
The Turnpike Authority approved a roughly three percent cost of living salary increase for all salaried employees affecting 243 staff. A proposed agreement with the Highway Patrol on trooper use on the Turnpike was also approved but details remain undisclosed pending patrol officials’ action.
Kansas University journalism professor Elmer F. Beth was rushed by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after feeling ill in his office. He has a diabetes condition and is believed to be suffering from insulin shock.
A statewide Young Republicans convention is set for November 12 to 14 at the Eldridge Hotel with Mike Getto in charge of arrangements.
In Dallas a 3 year old female bulldog chained in a neighbor’s yard mauled and killed Mark Paul Dale. Officers found the body four doors from the Dale home. The dog, one of two owned by Kenneth Earl Parker and his wife, was taken to an animal shelter and the Parkers asked that it be destroyed.
Dr. George F. Budd will be inaugurated as the fifth president of Pittsburg State College in Carney Hall auditorium during an all student convocation Friday. Gov. William H. Avery and Arthur H. Cromb will attend, along with several college presidents from state institutions.
William Henry Johns a famed Kansas peace officer from Lawrence died at 85 in Topeka after a morning heart attack. Funeral 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Lawrence. burial Oak Hill Lawrence. Survived by widow Beatrice and children Walter Johns of Lawrence and Walter T. Johns of Lawrence.
Rep. Robert Ellsworth of Kansas was named congressional observer for the 1965 meetings of the boards of governors of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Monetary Fund. Secretary Fowler praised Ellsworth for his studies on monetary reform and noted the President’s appreciation of his efforts.
Heard in Lawrence Joy Weatherwax of 401 Mo. was elected head B team cheerleader at Lawrence High School. Other on the team include Paula Crown 403 Homestead Judy Hanankrat 517 Kansas Barbara Shurtz 1516 Mass and Cindy Gallup 848 W 21st named alternates. The Kansas University International Club will sponsor the first meeting of the new school year at 8 p.m. Saturday Sept 18 in the Big Eight and Jayhawk Rooms. Chancellor W Clarke Wescoe will speak to new KU foreign students and guests. Lawrence residents are invited to attend per A R Singh KU senior and I C president.
A joint city school committee discussed tentative proposals for a year round swimming pool at Lawrence High School with public use in summer and a school program the rest of the year. A 7:30 a.m. Friday meeting was scheduled at the LHS administrative center.
In memory of Chester P Baecker who died Sept. 14 1956 now nine years gone, loved by wife and daughters. In memory of Earl M Hobbs who died Sept. 14 1952 now thirteen years gone, remembered by wife brother and sisters with loving sorrow and devotion.
