Kansas University band director Bob Foster checked his watch and blew the whistle to start the 45th annual KU Band Day parade. He greeted about 65 high school bands along Seventh Street and coordinated directions as crowds watched near Seventh and Massachusetts.
LIHUE Hawaii AP President Bush declared most of Hawaii a disaster area after Hurricane Iniki slammed Kauai. Two on Kauai and one on Oahu were killed, with hundreds of millions in damage and at least 98 injured. Power was out islandwide and federal aid is immediately available.
Dana Getzinger says she was naive and unsuspecting a typical college student when a stranger in a ski mask sneaked into her room and tried to rape her while a sophomore at the University of Georgia. Getzinger was stabbed and nearly died in the 1988 attack, which she later learned was at least the fifth within three months on students near the campus. The federal Campus Security Act requires universities to publish crime statistics and security procedures for the prior three years, covering 2,222 institutions. Schools risk losing federal money for noncompliance. Many private colleges kept details confidential, sparking calls for greater transparency.
Lawrence district officials say students surpassed state averages on spring math and reading tests but lag in core areas. In 10th grade math Lawrence led state in estimation and seventh graders excelled in non routine problems, yet statewide expectations show little growth in problem solving across all three tested grades.
Kansas defeated Ball State 62-10 at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Dan Hichieff kicked a 61 yard field goal, a school record, as Chip Hilleary threw three touchdown passes in the rout, marking KU’s highest point total in 24 years.
City manager Richard E. Anderson of Florida City Florida states there is a nationwide rumor promising high-paying local construction work, but he clarifies that the claim is not true. The denial appears on page 2A of the story.
