Veteran WAUKON druggist clings to work despite plans to retire
John C Opfer, a lifelong pharmacist in WAUKON, has wanted to retire for eight years but remains active at 75. He sold his store in 1941 to Francis Sullivan, once a longtime clerk, and stayed on due to wartime pharmacist shortages. A registered graduate now works, but state rules mandate a year internship with a registered pharmacist, so Opfer continues to toil.
