Police move against reckless bike riders in Lawrence

KU History Professor Receives Leave for Scholarships

George M. Beckmann assistant Professor of history at the University of Kansas has been granted a one year leave of absence to accept Fulbright and Ford Foundation scholarships to study Far Eastern history in Tokyo Japan. He earned a PhD in history from Stanford and a BA from Harvard magna cum laude. Beckmann will depart with his wife and son and return to KU next September.

Unified Europe vote to begin work on Western federation

In Strasbourg the Schuman Plan assembly voted by a large margin Saturday to start laying the foundations of a unified Western Europe without delay. Town Fire Damages OK Basin District Business Area

A Friday blaze in an eastern Oklahoma town damaged the basin district and threatened the entire business area. The flames raged for about two hours before firefighters gained control with help from three nearby towns. One person was injured as crews worked to contain the fire and prevent further losses. officials estimated damage around 190 dollars.

Four Topeka men buy Morrell Plant to form Topeka Industries

Three Men Injured In Wreck North Of City

About 12:45 am at TeePre Junction a mile north of Lawrence three men were injured in a collision. James Buster FM of Kansas City was driver of one car and admitted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital overnight for X rays. James Clayton Schmitz of Route 3 and Emmitt Rowe of Kansas City, Kan, in the other car received cuts and bruises, treated and released. No damage estimate available.

Bids opened on Lawrence bypass and K-32 reroute

Kansas Highway Commission in Topeka opened bids for the Lawrence bypass and K-32 re routing near Linwood along with other state highway projects. Low bid for the bypass came from M W Watson of Topeka at 190 883.12 for grading and paving. George Bennett Construction bid 2510.43 for grading west of Linwood, University Bridge Co submitted a bid for a 208 foot steel girder bridge, and Tole Landscaping Service bid 16 359.90 for roadside seeding. The project aims to lengthen lanes and connect to US 40 near the city, with grading possible this fall and paving postponed to next spring due to weather.
