Three Die as Dredge Sinks in Coos Bay Channel
COOS BAY Ore A 268 foot Army dredge sank in the Coos Bay Channel minutes after being rammed by the Norwegian freighter Thorshall. Three crewmen were killed one was missing and six were injured. Captain Carl Heil said the Thorshall seemed to drift and strike twice as both ships passed in the narrow channel. The Viking figurehead tore into the Rossell’s port side and a rapid boat and helicopter rescue was under way within minutes as the dredge went down with two of its three watertight bulkheads breached.
