Governors remain split over Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus actions at Little Rock. Some endorse his use of National Guard to block integration. others condemn the move as a breach of legal procedure. Not all governors spoke, with several avoiding comment.
Poland's Communist party chief Wladyslaw Gomulka and Prime Minister Cyrankiewicz arrived for talks with Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito in Belgrade. Accompanying them were Edward Ochab and Foreign Minister Adam Rapacki as they pursue stronger ties between two independent Communist nations in a historic first meeting in over a decade.
William E. Leis, formerly of Lawrence, died September 3 in Sioux City Iowa. Burial occurred there. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Henry Leis early Lawrence residents. Further details were not available. Funeral arrangements were handled by Cooper Warren Mortuary.

The city faces simultaneous needs for relief sewers in the northwest, a northwest water trunk line, and a southward pipeline to ease central bottlenecks. Engineers expected staggered projects, but rapid growth created concurrent demands. The City Commission delayed a bus election until private operation emerged.
In New Mexico the Republican Gov Edwin L Mechem is limited by bipartisan influence in the Statehouse. Secretary of State Natalie Smith Buck a Democrat would become acting governor when Mechem leaves the state. Lt Governor Joseph M Montoya recently moved to Congress, shaping a possible vacancy for major state posts. The governor appears intent on staying within New Mexico.
In Vortland Maine officials voted to drop the state’s long held early vote in September indicating a shift to November balloting. The special referendum shows about one fifth of Maine’s roughly half a million registered voters participated. The change takes effect in 1960.
Topeka Frank Theis Democratic state chairman condemned Republican state chairman James Pratt for calling a recent GOP statement a political tilt. Theis notes most elective offices and the Legislature lean GOP and accuses Pratt of seeking one party rule while criticizing the two party system.
Dr. John J. McNown, dean of the Kansas University Engineering School, was appointed to the National Science Foundation engineering sciences advisory panel by Dr. Alan Waterman. The panel reviews grant requests for research and scholarships. McNown will attend a Washington D C meeting Thursday and Friday. He is a KU alum and hydraulics and engineering mechanics expert.
Following deans meetings and adviser conferences for all new students will continue through Wednesday. Physical examinations begin Wednesday at Watkins Memorial Hospital and run through Saturday. Enrollment starts 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the Union Ballroom and continues through Saturday afternoon. Registration materials available today at the Registrar's Office in Strong Hall. Forms must be filled and returned to enrollment lines.
Lawrence requires new and expanded schools as the Board of Education reviewed progress on the Raymond A. Schwegler School Hillcrest and Pinckney additions. Delays include glass, linoleum, and seating issues. Completion expected by October with painting delayed to Sept. 16 after fixtures. Pinckney kindergarten housed in West Side Presbyterian basement at $10 weekly rent shared utilities.
A Boy Scout of Honor court Monday at First Christian Church honored 15 Troop 53 members. William Vaughn Combs presided. Recipients include Jim McCarla Robert Kring Steven Larson Gilbert Weidman Kenneth Keltz Joe Gilliam Ernest Sturdivant Donald Knight Kim Kring John Dingman Kent Dobbing Dobbins Darrel Craig Garran Allison Tommy Risk and Craig for various ranks and merit badges including Life, Citizenship and Camping.
CAPE CANAVERAL Flash Apparent preparations for firing a guided missile were called off at the missile testing center last night. No missile type was disclosed though an Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile is known to be nearly ready for firing. Earlier a small fast missile was launched in a routine test with searchlights used to track it. The lights appeared, vanished, then reappeared before going dark again as a Navy blimp patrolled the area.
The 1957 Tennessee Legislature enacted a law making illegal possession or use of dynamite a felony with up to ten years in prison. Police investigate a school blast here and thefts of dynamite and caps from a highway project near Franklin, about 17 miles south of Nashville.
The Agriculture Department forecasts this year’s government limited corn yield at 3,194,674,000 bushels and wheat at 923,268,000 bushels. Corn is up 128,903,000 from last month’s forecast, while wheat exceeds last month by 8,290,000. Winter wheat holds at 699,601,000. spring wheat totals vary by category with 232,667,000 for all spring wheat and 192,187,000 for durum and related grades.
Dr Charles Leone of Kansas University leads a program to develop a safe virus vaccine using high energy radiation. A $20 000 yearly grant from the US Public Health Service funds three years of studies at Argonne Laboratory with collaboration from Hugo Fricke. An AEC contract for $9 500 continues this year as Leone studies radiation sickness mechanisms.
A Pan American World Airways airliner with 58 aboard turned back to Idlewild Airport due to engine trouble over the Atlantic. The No 3 engine was reported uncontrollable, and the craft landed safely.
The Lawrence board of education approved a permanent agreement with architect Charles Marshall of Topeka and MacConnell and O'Dell school planning group of Stanford University to locate and design a proposed junior high. Estimated cost is 1.1 million dollars with 0.25 percent fees to the firm and architect. The group will present findings in October as the district hires five new teachers and four custodians, with budget details disclosed for general and building funds.
Unrest erupts at Woodlawn as 75 to 100 white pupils from about 3,000 stage a noisy demonstration for continued segregation. They refuse class entry but disperse after police warn of fire hoses. In Little Rock, Judge Davies schedules a Sept 20 hearing on injunction petitions, with federal attorneys asked to draft restraining order. National Guardsmen guard the governor's mansion as a deputy U.S. marshal serves the order on Faubus.

Italian star Sophia Loren plans to marry her manager Carlo Ponti who is recently divorced in Mexico. Ponti’s spokesman Carlson said he has not seen the proposal but noted we have some problems and that all of us must get together.

Baldwin Commercial Club members will elect officers at their first meeting of the year. A barbecue dinner will be held at the Bill Horne home. The group plans to solicit funds for and direct celebrations of Christmas Easter and July 4th as well as an all sports annual banquet.
Midwest Democrats announce a two day fall meeting in Kansas City October 17 and 18 for Midwest Democratic leaders and elected officials. Jake More, Iowa party chair, chairs the planning and arrangements committee as six Democratic governors and several senators and congressmen reportedly accepted invitations. Discussions will cover foreign aid, economy, money and national issues with speakers slated for luncheons dinners breakfasts and three panel discussions.
Lawrence city officials plan to begin negotiations in the coming days for land to add a fifth city off street parking lot on the east side of Vermont Street in the 900 block opposite Plymouth Congregational Church. A petition from property owners enabling the project was filed earlier but other city business slowed progress. The city also seeks an extension of its option on land for a sixth lot at the northwest corner of 10th and N. H. Streets, with a petition circulating for weeks. Some owners are reportedly on vacation, delaying petition completion, but supporters are optimistic about filing it successfully. At least 15 to 20 voters had been transported to the polls by the Lions Club this morning to aid Murl Beal, the chairman.

Charles Menkins a Phoenixville truck driver faced a pistol wielding robber in a suburban Philadelphia diner. He spoke softly and demanded the gun be set down, then disarmed the assailant. Police later arrested John E King Jr of East Whiteland Township on firearms and parole violation charges.
Topeka report by Dr. Alfred Bay shows 17 of 32 Menninger School psychiatrists this year work in Kansas. Gov. Docking asked a social welfare board to review the $750,000 annual training program for psychiatrists. Bay noted nine of 14 hospital graduates chose to stay in the state.
Havana Cuba President Fulgencio Batista's government moved today against any revolt in the ranks of the armed services. Sailors were jailed and army officers transferred. Loyalty checks were ordered for all military personnel.

Baldwin public schools show total enrollment of 465 for fall per Superintendent Clarence Gordon. High school enrollment is 166 and elementary 299, with high school up from last year while elementary declines. Several new rooms added in secondary grades. other grades limited to one room each.
A full schedule of fall field days at Kansas State College branch stations in September will cover studies on crops. Reports include irrigation tents and dryland crop production. One field day is set for October 1 at the Ottawa station.
A divorce suit was filed in District Court by E. N. Lathrom against Mary J. Lathrom. The action seeks dissolution of the marriage and related relief in the court.
Four traffic violation cases were heard today in police court. Julie Sokal of 1428 Conn Ist faced a $5 fine suspended for one traffic school session for failure to yield. Walter George Shaw of Linwood received a $10 fine with $5 suspended for one traffic school session after running a red light. Chris Shubert of Route 2 Bonner Springs had a $5 fine suspended for one traffic school session for running a red light. Della J. Cleland of Route 3 Baldwin had a $5 fine suspended for one traffic school session for making an illegal left turn.
