Bonds were without a definite trend. Foreign currencies were mixed. Wheat at Chicago was unchanged to up ½ cent a bushel and corn was down 4% to 15 higher. A drop of more than 57,000 tons in August shipments of the U. S. Steel Corporation from the July total was in line with expectations and failed to disturb stocks in the steel group. The motors and utilities were about unchanged and Du Pont and Kennecott were backward. Of interest to financial observers were the developments in France. Renewed concern was evident over the rate of capital from the franc to the dollar and British pound. Nervousness over the international situation brought early selling of stocks in London. Equities of companies voting increased dividends or higher payments of preferred arrearage received buying attention, although a few of these were said probably to have discounted favorable disbursements. Retail store stocks maintained their balance fairly well as September sales date were reported to be well over those of a year ago and final months of 1936 were expected to be the best since 1930.
