Six Die in Mine Fire at American Lode Near Alma
In Fairplay Colorado on September 9 1939 a blaze at the American Lode gold mine near Alma trapped 18 men. Six perished and three were badly burned as workers battered iron window gratings and escaped by breaking through the bars and benches. Harry Mandl age 29 recalled the two second window escape.
