Bert Austin of Lake City credits two passing motorists with rescuing his wife after their jeep overturned and caught fire four miles south of Hass on Highway JR3. Lawrence office reports 90 people placed in jobs in the last week including 53 women and 37 men. At week end 28 openings remained: 18 for women and 19 for men. Listed job types include teachers, clerks, stenographers, bookkeepers, sales staff, and several skilled trades.
Franklin Orlin Carter, a 44 year old farmer and Fredonia firefighter, collapsed battling a prairie blaze north of Fredonia Kansas. The fire burned over 200 acres of pasture land and Carter died yesterday from a heart seizure caused by smoke inhalation. He would have turned 45 this month.
Alexander Davis of 1331 N Y Street was fined 25 dollars in police court today on a charge of drunkenness.
A wiry former matador rushed into the ring to pull Patricia McCormick from a bull's horns in Ciudad Acuña across the Rio Grande. McCormick, a U of Big Spring student, remained in critical condition in Del Rio hospital after the incident. Born in St Louis, she moved to Arkansas City with her parents as a child.
President Eisenhower announced that the United States intends to pursue a six nation atomic pool to share peaceful technology. He cited possible participation by Britain Canada Belgium South Africa Australia and possibly others while stressing cooperation and peaceful uses of atomic energy.

A 38 year old woman, Mise Blackwell, died after a pistol discharged during a Monday night dragnet film in Fort Worth. A 41 year old male companion said the weapon slipped from his pocket, is being held, and authorities plan to file illegal carrying a pistol charges. The incident caused a crowd to react but no stampede as the theater continued showings.
In Shreveport Louisiana ten Kansas women on a sightseeing trip were killed when their car skidded into a vehicle driven by Joe M Menre of Prosser City La. One passenger David Fazio 10 was injured and Mrs Nellie M Moshy 64 president of Jayhawk Hotel Co Topeka along with Kate Brown alum of Topeka were identified among the dead. Mrs A W Pierce 59 of Topeka remained in serious condition at a Shreveport hospital.
Lawrence and Douglas County reported no serious traffic incidents over the long weekend. Temperatures cooled from yesterday’s 99 degrees with downtown readings around BR degrees and a forecast of more mild conditions tonight and possible light rain in the extreme southeast.

Evangeline Lindbergh mother of the famed flyer Charles A Lindbergh died today at her home in suburban Grosse Pointe Park. She was 79 years old.
Boston municipal Judge Jacob J. Speigel broke a window to enter his West Newton home after forgetting his key. Six patrolmen arrived shortly after as a neighbor who called police feared a burglar was attempting a break in.
Bertha Kimball Ogiesvie 49 formerly of Lawrence died at her Topeka home.
