Rush Week Records Fall Short for KU Fraternities

A KU record shows 374 women entering sorority Rush Week and 585 men registering for fraternities by Sunday noon. Coke parties and Best Date events mark the week as pledges are expected for most rushees. A second registration Tuesday morning will decide pledges with all lists due Wednesday noon.

Jessie Malone a Sunflower girl 9 drowns while swimming in Spring River near Thayer Missouri during Labor Day weekend. Her grandfather 64 drowns trying to rescue her as Jessie’s sister Geraldine 9 escapes. Father also required artificial respiration after rescue attempt.

De Castries Arrives Saigon While Resting From Release

Brig. Gen. Christian de Castries, French commander at Dien Bien Phu, arrived in Saigon from Hanoi after rest following his release by the Vietminh. He offered no comment and planned no public statement until returning to Paris, then to Dalat to join Gen. Paul Ely. The Paris departure date remains undisclosed.

Centennial Ball tickets go on sale tomorrow in city

Tickets for the Centennial Celebration Ball go on sale tomorrow for the September 22 event to be held in the Lawrence High gym. Local Race Driver Killed at Mayetta

Sinks, 19, of Topeka, died after his car overturned during a jalopy race at Mayetta track. He suffered a fatal head injury and was pronounced dead on arrival at a Topeka hospital. Survivors include wife Bernice and infant son Charles Dean. funeral planned at Rumsey Funeral Home.

Shrine Leader Dies in Oklahoma Sanitarium

Dr. R. Claude Young, 79, president of the Cowley County Shrine club and longtime Ark City surgeon since 1905, died Saturday night in a sanitarium. A Lyons, Kansas native, he is survived by three children, Dr. Donald Young of Houston Texas, Ro Claude Young of Ark City, and Mrs. Wilma Jean Soldani of Tulsa.

Highway Death Toll Rises Amid Labor Day Rush

With the Labor Day holiday near its end the national highway toll climbs past 259 traffic deaths plus 50 drownings and 46 other fatalities totaling 355. National Safety Council president Ned H Dearborn warns the toll could reach 400 as 65 hours remain. States listed include Arkansas Colorado Illinois Iowa Kansas Missouri Nebraska Oklahoma.

Weekend traffic largely clear amid Labor Day holiday

Despite heavy Labor Day travel, Lawrence and Douglas County reported no major accidents through the weekend with Charles W. Sinks dying in a jalopy race not counted as a traffic fatality. Law officers planned constant highway patrol as crowds and KU Rush Week travelers arrived.

Kansas City Man Dies In Wreck Near Lansing

A Kansas City man, Athan Thomason, 22, died early today in a flaming crash on US Highway 73 a mile south of Lansing. His wife and another passenger, Joe Andrews, 27, both from Kansas City, were admitted to Leavenworth hospital with non serious injuries.

Lawrence prepares to open schools for 4000 pupils
