More than 650 full time faculty at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti walked out after talks broke off. Worldwide religious repression chronicled
A State Department report warns most of the world lacks religious freedom and names Iraq and Afghanistan as among the worst offenders. It notes 144 countries are parties to a covenant affirming religious rights, with the 2000 report covering July 1999 to June 2000 across 194 regions. It cites brutal campaigns against Shiite leaders and adherents in Iraq. It also highlights deteriorating freedom in China and continuing repression in Myanmar, plus ongoing persecution in Afghanistan.
