Jerry Lewis returned from illness to lead the Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day telethon to $54.6 million. Ed McMahon joined him as the 35th annual 23 hour event aired on about 200 stations and online, surpassing last year’s $53 million and potentially rising as local stations extended broadcasts. Lewis vowed to continue the telethon each Labor Day until a cure is found.
