Dairy Herd Intruder Raises Milk Drop In Louisiana Study
A USDA Dairy Field Station study in Jeanerette Louisiana finds that introducing a new cow to an established herd can reduce milk and butterfat output by up to five percent. The disruption triggers excitement, headbutting, and tension until the intruder is accepted, a process that may last days. Returning cows after absence also disrupts herd routine, with longer absences causing longer readjustment.
