Traffic deaths across the nation rose during the Labor Day period with fatalities near 420 expected for the 78 hours ending at midnight. By day three, about 300 lives had been lost, with emergency officials warning the homeward rush could drive the toll higher.
A excursion train carrying about 600 Roman Catholics home from a beach outing derailed near Kendal village sixty miles west of Kingston. Authorities reported 1500 dead and over 400 injured as hospitals overflowed. Newark reports the death of Dr Henry Orton, 71, a renowned laryngologist and throat surgeon. Former director of head and neck service at the Maryland Medical Center, he was internationally known for his medical contributions.
