Unprecedented effort to rescue Chilean miners at San Jose mine
The Chilean rescue tale centers on drilling a 31 ton drill to a 2 200 foot depth and carving a 26 inch rescue chimney through solid rock for 33 miners trapped at San Jose. A three hour ascent in a cage awaits each man after months of drilling and hazardous shifts to clear 3 000 tons of rock. NASA experts assist with nutrition and mental health as officials monitor conditions and morale.
