New UF Report Shows Campaign Totals For 13 Agencies

Refacing Planned for Southwestern Bell Building In Lawrence

Prairie Park Proposal Approved By Kansas Group
Wichita AP A resolution urging the creation of a prairie national park in Kansas was approved at the Kansas Recreation and Park Association convention. Copies will go to the state Chamber of Commerce Congress members and the Interior Department Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. Gov. Docking said park funding attracts business and builds a community’s appeal for workers and new residents.

Protest Rally at KU Draws Nearly 125 Attendees
About 125 people gathered at Kansas University's Hoch Auditorium for a Halloween antiwar rally. Joe Cole, founder of GIs United Against the War in Vietnam, discussed organizing the group. Cole and soldiers from Ft. Jackson filed a suit after the Army denied a meeting request, nine leaders were arrested, one later identified as an informer, charges dropped for all. Oregon Teacher To End Series At Kansas University

County Jail Break Attempt Fails in Douglas County
Charles Edward Kingston, 30, of St. Louis Missouri, failed to break out of the Douglas County jail at about 7 a.m. today during breakfast distribution. Deputy Floyd Baker was struck with a broken broom handle and treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, while Kingston sustained a minor head cut and was treated there. Sheriff Rex Johnson credited the two-officer policy for preventing escape. Kingston remained in custody on burglary charges with a $15,000 bond. None of the other prisoners escaped.

California Fire Under Control after 5000 Acre Blaze
A Southern California brush fire that forced evacuations of hundreds of homes was contained after firefighters closed the last west flank. The blaze burned 5000 acres across canyon and foothill country in the San Fernando Valley above Granada Hills with 750 men on the lines and up to 24 structures damaged. The fire began Wednesday morning from an undetermined cause and spread from the Newhall area into the valley.

Family of Three Die in Wichita Area Traffic Tragedy
Five people including a Wichita family of three died in Kansas road crashes on Thursday. Rev. Joe W. Jones age 25 his wife Vadis 62 and their 2 year old daughter Vonda perished when their car struck a Missouri Pacific freight train near Wichita. Jones was Beech Aircraft Co. worker and Clearwater church pastor. Other victims included Joseph R. Walters 22 of Kansas City who died on the Kansas Turnpike near Admire after a near pass led to a spin into a bridge pillar. Bernard W. Schmidt 29 of Hays died when his car ran off US 183 and struck an embankment north of Hays.
