Volunteers plant fruit trees at Donation Garden in Peterson Park
About 20 volunteers planted 17 trees and 10 cherry bushes in the Donation Garden at Peterson Park with help from The Giving Grove and Caterpillar Foundation. The orchard aims to feed Just Food and other hunger-relief groups in Lawrence, though fruit will arrive in years, not days. The trees are drought resistant and expected to yield roughly 100 pounds of apples in three years and about 280 pounds in four, once mature.
