Convict Shot While Reaching Fence at Kansas State Prison
At Lansing Kansas a guard shot and seriously wounded TD Weatherly 84 serving 10 to 50 years for bank robbery after Weatherly and another convict tried to climb the 18 foot perimeter fence. The second man fled. Weatherly who had been paroled last February and worked on his father's farm near Centerton Ark was wounded in the left thigh. Two other inmates Loren Scharff and Willis Holbert both in solitary confinement were part of the plot. Guards in three nests fired for the attempted escape. Weatherly's condition declared not good and he was not expected to live. Two guards were suspended last spring for failing to fire on a prisoner who climbed the fence at that point.

Clay M Purcell Dies at 80 in Leavenworth
Clay M Purcell, 80, father of Lloyd Purcell and brother of Rarford Purcell of Lawrence, died yesterday in a Leavenworth hospital after a seven day illness. A retired Union Pacific locomotive engineer who lived most of his life in Leavenworth, he will be buried in a Leavenworth cemetery after funeral services at 2 pm tomorrow from the Seaton Funeral Home. He leaves a son Addison Purcell of Leavenworth. his wife died a month ago.

Nearly 200 registered for the twenty fifth annual Kansas State Nurses Association convention at the Hotel Eldridge with more expected. Delegates from across the state gathered, sessions moved from Dickinson theater to a junior high school due to heating issues, and Topeka was chosen as next year’s meeting city. Mary C. Bure presided, with Mayor Alfred Lawrence delivering a welcome and Catherine Tetyak replying. The gathering noted improvements in nursing employment and rising education, with two thousand surveys sent and 686 returned. Donations supported the McIsaac Loan Fund and the Isabel Wamnotor Robb Memorial scholarship, with a fifty dollar association contribution.
