French writer Jean-Paul Sartre won the 1964 Nobel Prize for Literature but announced he will refuse the $53,123 award plus medal and diploma. The Swedish Academy praised his imaginative work, while Sartre planned to explain his stance to the press.
President Johnson cites a smear lash driving Republicans to desert their temporary leaders during a St. Louis rally. He notes a GOP Illinois leader reported defections in 48 hours and recalls Walter Jenkins resigning after morals arrests amid crowd reaction.
Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara said China would take years to build its first nuclear devices and the missiles and planes to deliver them. He noted no immediate change in U.S. strategic forces. He warned about assessing Soviet shifts after Khrushchev's ouster and said the U.S. would counter increases if signs appear.
A fire damaged the top floor and room of a vacant cement block house about a quarter mile south of the Wakarusa bridge on 0 S 59 at about 10 40 am. Dale Loney was repairing it before moving in and fire officials said a trash tire started the blaze in the roof. The Wakarusa Township Fire Department contained the fire before the lower floor was affected. The owner is Mrs H L Veatch of 1127 Hilltop Dr.
Lawrence Country Club stockholders approved a new initiation plan reducing the refundable stock portion to 125 dollars from 462 paid at initiation. Most funds will finance initiation fees taxes and transfer. Three new directors were elected Norman Edmonds Gerald Cooley and Gertrude Zimmerman and Dick Wintermore was named president with Paul Beauchamp vice president and Walter Love secretary.
Mike Greenbaum of 539 Ohio St a junior at Kansas University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences suffered a severe forehead cut in a noon collision at the 7th and Massachusetts intersection. Camilla N Bookwalter of 2208 Ousdahl Rd drove a second car but was uninjured. Police said Greenbaum turning west onto Seventh collided with Bookwalter who had started crossing on a green light. About $1000 in damage. A small traffic jam formed as onlookers gathered near Lawrence Memorial Hospital ambulance transport.
Senator Barry Goldwater argues the U.S. wheat sale to the Soviet Union, paired with aid to satellites, strengthens Russia and could help depose Khrushchev. He spoke in Philadelphia and at the University of Pennsylvania, railing against foreign aid and rising socialism at public rallies and a university event.
Walter Jenkins and his family received substantial sympathy after his arrest on a morals charge. High profile figures including FBI Director J Edgar Hoover and Mrs Lyndon B Johnson expressed concern. Mrs Johnson spoke by phone with Mrs Jenkins and Luci Jenkins amid the family’s strain and public support.
Robert Thorne Lamb a 30 year old hospital therapist was sentenced to fifteen years after pleading guilty to shooting FBI agent James Cassidy in Kansas City on Sept 28. Cassidy survived and Lamb fired five shots before being subdued by agent Jimmy Calhoun. Lamb had used aliases Michael B. Thorne and Paul Willis.
The University Party at Kansas University approved a platform for the All Student Council elections November 11 and 12. Proposals include an internship program in state government for juniors and seniors, expanding the Human Rights Commission, a seniors only section at Memorial Stadium, an east stadium expansion, two new ASC committees, and housing information services. It also calls for Fraser Hall to become a Kansas museum and a parking plan allowing Zone QO parking across from Allen Fieldhouse without permits.
A college teacher Harvey Smith 36 killed his wife Sarah 30 and two children Kenneth 8 Glenn 6 then killed himself in Denham Springs Louisiana Two other children Kathy 12 and Janice 10 were wounded seriously in a .22 caliber shooting and hammer attack Police said Smith left a note claiming he wanted his family to be together in death and covered funeral and business details in the note Local hospital treated the two injured girls and authorities released limited details of the note
Former vice president Richard M. Nixon condemned the Johnson administration's foreign policy farm policy and war handling during a rally in Pratt Kansas an 8500 population Southern Kansas town. He urged new leadership and said the two party balance remains a strength while criticizing Viet Nam policy and legislative reapportionment.
Kansas State University appoints Dr. John Lott Brown as dean of the graduate school. Brown, a former Pennsylvania University physiology faculty member and former director of its graduate training in physiology, will assume duties early next year. He succeeds Dr. Harold Howe, now dean at St. Louis University.
The Fire Department responded to a brush fire near First and Lincoln Streets around 1 35 p m today extinguishing the flames.
In Jackson Mississippi federal Judge Harold Cox held Acting U S Attorney Nicholas Katzenbach's deputy Robert Hauberg in civil contempt for refusing to sign grand jury indictments. Cox ordered Hauberg jailed until compliance while signaling possible broader contempt actions against Justice Department officials.
A U S Army special forces officer was captured by Viet Cong during a sampan battle in Saigon. A Vietnamese witness said the officer, with exhausted ammunition, was dragged into a sampan and taken toward the Cambodian frontier, apparently uninjured.
Kansas State University President James McCain will discuss with University of Kansas Chancellor W. Clarke Wescoe the location of a proposed water resources institute. A disagreement over site was raised at the September Regents meeting, with a directive to reach agreement before the October 30 meeting in Manhattan.
