Western diplomats see a sharp decline in Soviet power as Poland’s upheaval tests Communist unity. Gomulka’s position remains Communist while Poland pursues its own path, signaling possible shifts in Eastern bloc control and echoing Titoist tendencies in Yugoslavia.
President Eisenhower almost watched Kansas versus Oklahoma from Lawrence as White House aides planned a West Coast campaign trip. A five hour Kansas stop became impossible, leaving Kansas fans disappointed as the top ranked Sooners won the clash.

The Kansas Turnpike saw over 12 000 cars on its test run Saturday with an estimated total near 15 000 as crowds checked the new highway. Officials scheduled a 10 30 pm opening ceremony with Turnpike authorities and state highway leader Lloyd Vireert noting high driver caution. Current registrations hover around 11,500 with Friday night closing. Campaigns run in Lawrence with Stevenson Kefauver rally and a Sertoma Club talk by Jett Scrivner. Douglas County’s population rise and swimming pool measure boost expected turnout beyond 1952’s 15,455. Those who haven’t registered or voted before the 194 general election must sign up. efforts include local meetings and political activity.
Five day outlook shows temperatures 2-8 degrees above normal across the three states with Nebraska cooler midweek and Oklahoma warmer later. Little or no precipitation expected. Nebraska may see light rain Thursday or Friday under 0.10 inch totals. Fair and mild in Kansas with Tuesday highs in the 70s and cooler east tonight.
