West German reporters back from Magdeburg report no strikes in the industrial city. They say factories were operating and workers denied strikes while voicing complaints over wage scales. No evidence of increased police patrols found. Der Tag reported 2,000 police rushed in.
Adlai Stevenson told a Cincinnati Music Hall crowd that any bold international move by President Eisenhower would split the Republican Party. He accused the administration of misleading about Suez and warned that Soviet power has extended into the Middle East. He pledged only an unending effort to use U S power wisely for peace and urged support in the name of anxiety, not promises. Stevenson planned a South Bend rally and Chicago TV speeches to fundraise in 20 cities.
Col Bernt Balchen, Norwegian born aviation pioneer and first to fly over the South Pole, will retire from the U S Air Force at month end. The service will award him the Distinguished Service Medal for leadership and Arctic expertise. He is 57 next Tuesday and currently at Pepperell Air Force Base in Newfoundland.

William Eugene Morgan, 29, confessed to shooting Richard Skram, 20, a St. Joseph Gazette reporter, as he sat in his car with a female employee near a city lake. Morgan’s sister alerted police after he left with a deer rifle Wednesday.

Floyd G. Porter, 45, of Sunflower, father of six, died in a one car crash on Highway K-10 near De Soto while en route home from work with the car leaving the road into a dry creek bed. He was a Navy veteran and Wellsville Methodist Church member. Funeral set for Monday at Sunflower Community Church with Amos Funeral Home handling arrangements. survivors include wife Naomi, six children, mother Jennie Porter, sister Lula Dallimore, and brother John Porter.
Census Bureau data reported Kansas population rose 8.1 percent from 1950 to July 1, 1955, reaching a total of 2,060,000. The release notes the gain reflects postwar growth across the state.
