Today in History: MacArthur lands at Leyte and key 18th–19th century milestones
On Oct 20 1944 General MacArthur fulfilled his return pledge by landing at Leyte in the Philippines, 2 1/2 years after his vow. In 1740 Maria Theresa began ruling Austria Hungary and Bohemia after Charles VI died. In 1803 the Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase. In 1903 a joint commission ruled in favor of the United States in a boundary dispute between Alaska and Canada.
